It’s long been known that milk has been used in beauty treatments throughout history – I mean, one of the main things Cleopatra is known for (other than her fabulous eyeliner, of course) was her lavish taste for milk baths. So, why has this dairy product stood the test of time, and is still being used within the cosmetics and wellness industries to this day?
Well as it’s National Milk Day, we thought we would delve into the science behind this age-old ingredient and provide you with the facts!
According to board-certified dermatologist Dr. Marisa Garshick, “Milk in general is a natural skin softener and can be soothing, hydrating, and help support the skin [since] it contains proteins and calcium.”
She also goes on to say that cow’s and goat’s milk contain lactic acid, which helps to gently exfoliate the skin and also increases cell turnover leading to brighter appearing skin. They also contain saturated and unsaturated fats that provide moisturization for the skin, whilst providing vitamins A, B and D.
Those with sensitive skin or people prone to eczema also benefit from using milk-based products, and cold milk compresses can even be used to help aid healing of sunburn!
It is no wonder then that with such incredible claims, that according to market research firm Mintel, over 1,500 beauty product launches contained milk in 2018 alone!
